What is Federal Work-Study (FWS)?
FWS provides an opportunity for part-time employment for students with financial need, allowing students to earn money to help pay educational expenses. The IUPUI work-study program encourages students to seek part-time work related to their programs of study or in community service. Positions are available on campus in a number of university departments and off campus at approved nonprofit and governmental agencies. Students can work up to 29 hours per week, and hourly pay rates vary, depending on job responsibilities and skill level required.
Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (4 credits for graduate students) each semester to maintain FWS eligibility during the academic year (fall and spring). To be considered for a FWS award during the summer sessions, students must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours in either summer session.
After registering for classes for the upcoming term, students will receive a Financial Aid Notification (FAN) from the Office of Student Financial Services via mail and email. After receiving a FAN, students must go to OneStart to accept or reject their FWS awards. Click here to view an online tutorial for guidance in how to accept or decline FWS awards and other financial aid loans.
Please remember the following:
- FWS awards not accepted by September 30 will be canceled and removed from your financial aid packaged.
- If you accept your FWS award, you are eligible to earn up to the full award amount over the fall and spring semesters.

There are many benefits of using FWS funds, such as FWS employment being positively linked to academic achievement and graduation. In addition, FWS earnings are excluded in determining expected family contribution in the next aid year. More benefits are listed below.
- Flexible work schedules

- Valuable work experience
- Reduced transportation costs with employment on or near campus in most cases
- Exemption from Social Security taxes (for FWS earnings)
