Regardless of the style of interview, it is imperative to be prepared. This page will identify types of interviews and provide tips on how to prepare for them.

In-Person Interviews

In-person and phone interviews are the most common interview style, but even these interviews can vary. The types of in-person and phone interviews may include:

  • One on one—you and the interviewer
  • One versus the group—you and multiple interviewers
  • Group versus group—you and one or more other candidates and multiple interviewers

Phone Interviews

Review the following tips before your phone interview:
  • Prepare before the day of the interview, just like you would for an in-person interview
  • Have your resume and a copy of the job description printed for quick reference
  • Keep a pen and notepad close
  • Have your questions ready
  • Smile during the interview, it comes through the phone
  • Speak slow and enunciate
  • Do not interrupt the interviewer
  • Take your time (A moment to collect your thoughts is acceptable.)

Online Chat and Video Interviews

The suggestions below may help you with an online chat or video interview:
  • Dress appropriately
  • Make sure your head and the top part of your shirt is in the frame
  • Avoid setting up in a place with lots of distractions
